The square born during the Medieval Age and it was called “paralascio” a latin word paralisium that influences the word “speak”, it was a place considered the center of the citizens during the XVII century the architect Lorenzo Nottolini took the old urban structure of the town. It was opened the part of amphitheatre around the elliptic form taking away the old buildings. The new urban space was used for the citizen market until the XVIII century when the market was placed into the Mercato del Carmine. Nowadays the floor of the square has been raised to 3 meters respect to the Roman arena.
On the square there are many shops within them it is also possible to see the structures of the Republican age. The access to the square is possible from 4 gates, but just one of them represents the original access.
