Lucca is one of the main arts town of Italy, famous in all the world for its walls of the XV-XVII century, it has a perimeter of 4.450 m around the old town and it is considered to be one of the main town of province togheter with Ferrara, Grosseto, Bergamo cause of its historical walls. The rectangular grid of its historical centre preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. Traces of the amphitheatre can still be seen in the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. Lucca has the nick-name of “town of the 100 churches” because of the numerous churches into the old town. There are a lot of towers, bell towers, Renaissance palaces.
The town has also urban places: the most notable is that of Anfiteatro square, born from the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre at the hands of Lorenzo Nottolini; it is surely unique in its genre.
The main street is Fillungo street, a Medieval street that links the main commercial services of the town.
Other suggetive square are San Michele square and San Martino square where it is located the Duomo of San Martino.
Thanks to its historical aspect, it has being proposing to include the old town of Lucca, where there is also the historical theatre of tradition, the Giglio theatre, into the list of the humanity heritage of UNESCO.
